PEGASYS Award for Best Professional TV show
Richard Spidaro is a gentle soul, a charming and
outspoken person, who supports himself by offering sheets of his
poetry to passers-by and accepting whatever
donations they wish to give. In this documentary Richard tells us
the story of his life: "I was born in Buffalo,
but I grew up in Yonkers. After a couple of years at a community
college in Weschester, I got drafted. I did
my basic military training at Fort Benning, GA. made the required
jumps, then got shipped to Germany, which
I really liked. They have really good beer there" he says.
After that Richard hitchhiked to all 50 states,
to Quebec, where he lived for a time, and to Acapulco, Mexico.
He says that he has gone on "poetry binges" throughout
his life and has had some poems published in anthologies.
His poetry reflects his profound sense of
love for the Catholic church and his passion for life.
